Pacers Links: Myles Turner looking for better offer from Pacers
recent reports from the pacemaker and Myles Turner working on a contract extension by renegotiating the remaining months of his current contract to add money this year and then extend it into the future were more confirmed in a report by Marc Stein earlier this week.
Myles Turner, up to this point, has turned down Indiana’s contract extension offers, league sources say. The same goes for Jordan Clarkson in Utah, where sources say the Jazz came into the season hoping to secure a new long-term deal with Clarkson before he becomes a free agent this summer. Naturally, there are teams waiting for Turner or Clarkson (or both) to be in the game for trades before the deadline. I don’t see the Jazz trading Clarkson; Turner’s situation continues to be more difficult to read.
So the key to this update is that the Pacers and Turner are in fact negotiating and have gotten to the point where one side leaks the status of the negotiation. Myles has been playing the part of him of late, making his appreciation of him very public to the fans at the Fieldhouse and the current state of the team and his role in this amazing season.
The renegotiation deadline is March 1, which would allow the Pacers to hand over a large portion of their unused cap space to Turner for the remainder of the year, which would overall prompt a modest raise that the team would no doubt prefer to offer him. to Turner. However, Feb. 9 is the trade deadline and the Pacers will need to have some kind of agreement to weigh trades. If not, they will have to find the best deal possible. Yes, as time goes by, the situation is still difficult to read. Hopefully both parties are working together in good faith as they claim to be.
In other roster news, Oshae Brissett and James Johnson both had guaranteed contracts for the rest of the season. Not surprising considering the excess money the Pacers have under the cap combined with the valuable role both players provide on this list. Brissett is simply always ready to come off the bench despite sporadic minutes from game to game awaiting injury, foul trouble or the need for a boost in a game that’s veering off course. As for Johnson, his best work has come off the court on the bench and in the locker room as the veteran presence the rest of the roster loves to lean on because of his experience. Oh, and when called upon to play, Johnson only knows how to play hardball.
