Improving mental health in the new year

WCVB NEWS CENTER 5 AT 5:30. SHAUN: MANY PEOPLE ARE THINKING AHEAD OF THE NEW YEAR AND A NEW SURVEY SHOWS NOT EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO WELCOME 2023. JESSICA: HERE WITH SOME PERSPECTIVE IS THAT MGH PSYCHIATRIST AND PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. >> THANK YOU. JESSICA: LET’S START WITH A STRONG NUMBER OF THIS BOWL. 37% OF AMERICANS DESCRIBED THEIR MENTAL HEALTH AS FAIR OR POOR, AND THAT’S AN INCREASE FROM THE SAME TIME LAST YEAR. IT DEPENDS. WE TALK A LOT ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS IN THIS COUNTRY, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE PANDEMIC AND DURING THE PANDEMIC, ARE YOU SURPRISED THAT MORE PEOPLE ARE CONCERNED OR THESE NUMBERS? >> NO SURPRISE, WE KNOW HOW MUCH STRESS AMERICANS ARE UNDER, AND UNFORTUNATELY THAT COMES OUT IN THEIR VIEWS ABOUT THEIR MENTAL HEALTH. THE SILVER LINE IS THAT AMERICANS TALK ABOUT THEIR MENTAL HEALTH. WE HAVE PUT IT ON THE NATIONAL AGENDA, AND THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS GETTING HELP TO IMPROVE OUR MENTAL HEALTH IS TO BE OPEN, FRIENDLY AND TRUTHFUL. >> IT ALWAYS HELPS TO TALK ABOUT IT. BACK TO THE POLE, ONE IN FOUR PEOPLE SAID THEY EXPECT TO FEEL MORE STRESS IN THE NEW YEAR. ARE THERE STRATEGIES WE CAN WORK ON NOW IS IT KIND OF EASE THAN A LITTLE? >> THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH STRESS IS TO BE PREPARED FOR IT. JESSICA: DESPITE THE POLO, THE NUMBERS, A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY THEY ARE MAKING PLANS TO IMPROVE THEIR MENTAL HEALTH. 65% SAID THEY WOULD DO MORE EXERCISE. 45% WANT TO TRY MEDITATION. MANY OF THESE RESOLUTIONS. 38% SAID THEY WOULD SEE A THERAPIST, SOMETHING THAT HAS REALLY CHANGED AND CHALLENGED OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS. IT’S GREAT TO MAKE RESOLUTIONS, BUT HOW CAN WE WORK TO MAINTAIN THEM OVER TIME? THAT IS ALWAYS THE HARD PART. >> SURE IT IS, AND WE KNOW IF IT WAS EASY TO EXERCISE EVERY DAY AND DO ALL THE THINGS THAT MAKE US HEALTHY, WE WOULD HAVE DONE IT A LONG TIME AGO. SO REALLY KEEPING ON OUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS IS MAKING RESOLUTIONS THAT ARE MANAGEABLE. TO THINK ABOUT ONE STEP AT A TIME, DIVIDE IT AND REMEMBER THAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION. IT’S EASY TO BUILD ON SMALL SUCCESSES AND THEN FEEL LIKE WE FAILED TO SET OUR GOAL OF RUNNING A MARATHON BY FEBRUARY. JESSICA: GOOD ADVICE, THANKS FOR BEING HERE. SHAUN: HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR. JESSICA: VISITORS TO THE TOWER, IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS WHAT AND
